Oasis Eco Camp is an intimate friendly getaway on the shores of Lake Elementaita which is on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, Set in the midst of a natural acacia forest and bushes, it is home to abundant bird life, with the lake area boasting of over 450 species of birds (The camp is a birders paradise
On such a very busy afternoon in the Nairobi’s heart, many people seeming to be stranded due to lack of public means to take them to their villages to celebrate the Mashujaa day in style. We get lucky and check in to one of the shuttles heading to Nakuru at a hiked price that really bothered us, but we had no choice..hahaha.
We got to Gilgil, Kikopey at almost 8p.m, roughly 120km from Nairobi taking us 2 hours to get there. We take off and board a boda boda (motorcycle) to get us through the long rough and bumpy terrain to our first entourage site for the weekend. A warm welcome from one of the receptionists is followed by a free offer to be directed to one of the tents set exclusively for us through the bushy narrow path full of thickets. We finally get in; to our amazement the tent had more than we anticipated; a lighting system, two beds, washroom with all necessities and a cloth hanger. Meals are available but should be ordered in advance for early preparation. The night was quite chilly, and being my first camping out in the wild, I can attest my experience was memorable.

In the morning, we were guided into the rooms, cottages at affordable rates and shown a path to take to Lake Elementaita to see the hotsprings, just besides the camp, beautiful scenery with as many as over 150 different bird species. Before leaving, we decided to have a swing on the children’s corner to refresh our childhood memories as we wait for our ‘driver’ (boda boda man..haha). We bid goodbye to some of the workers and promise to be back another time.
